  • From our location in the most beautiful part of the city – we get to see our neighbours beautifully kept gardens every single day.  Whilst there is little doubt that there is a lot of talent around us – those of you less confident may be interested to hear that the Gardening Scotland Exhibition is coming to The Royal Highland Centre, Ingliston, Edinburgh at the beginning of next month.

    Featuring a wide range of special stalls including a hall from Dobbie’s Garden Centre and the BBC Scotland Beechgrove team – here is an opportunity to get some gardening hints and ideas – whatever your level of confidence.

    In this age of people trying to become a bit more self sufficient – this is the perfect place to get advice on how to grow things at home.  Just think – if you think we don’t make our curries spicy enough – but are too polite to ask – you could learn how to grow your own chillies or fresh coriander and add them yourself!

  • The end of May once again bring quality Rugby back to Murrayfield.  After the recent Magic Weekend of Rugby League, the 29th and 30th of May brings the annual 7s Rugby tournament to Edinburgh’s Murrayfield with 44 games being played over the 2 days.  7s tournaments are synonymous across the world with great excitement – and for being a fantastic spectacle – with Hong Kong pretty much grinding to a halt each year for their equivalent.

    For the non initiated – 7s differs from normal rugby in that the team is made up of only 7 players – and the matches are only 15 minutes long.

    Why not take advantage of this great spectacle and have a 7 themed weekend – with a day at the matches followed by a table for 7 at the Himalaya – let us know you are coming and we can pull together a perfect Curry banquet for 7!

  • This month’s curry of the month is a true spicy taste of India! Far more flavoursome than a vindaloo – and with lovely steam cooking it is a fresh and fiery treat! For a first timer – this isn’t a place to start – but for you curry lovers in Edinburgh – this is one of our best treats at our restaurant (or order for takeaway).

    North Indian Chilli Garlic Chicken

    The three main ingredients are advertised in the name of the dish – and when one of them is chilli – you know that this is not one for the more cautious eater! This is a dish with large pieces of all three – in a lively sauce and garnished with fresh coriander. The ingredients are complemented with a range of other spices and flavourings to ensure that the overall taste is well balanced and pleasing to the tongue.

    We’d recommend eating it with some lovely fresh rice – and maybe a cool glass of lassi, beer or wine!

  • Do you ever fancy making a curry at home – but don’t know where to start? In the upcoming months we will teach you a few authentic Indian recipes to let you make some fantastic curries at home.

    Baby Aubergine Curry

    A recipe you can try in your own time – if you want to make it less spicy – add less chilli – or leave them out all together!

    Ingredients:

    • 8 baby aubergines
    • 1 cup of unsalted peanuts
    • 2 tablespoons of Sesame Seeds
    • 1 tablespoon of dry coconut powder
    • ½ a Cinnamon Stick
    • 2 cloves
    • 2 green cardamon pods
    • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
    • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
    • 1 teaspoon of ground coriander
    • ½ tablespoon of ginger paste
    • ½ tablespoon of garlic paste
    • 1 medium sized onion – finely chopped
    • 3 to 4 green chillies (vary to taste!) – sliced as you like them.
    • 2 tablespoons of tamarind pulp (use the juice of a lemon + 1 teaspoon of brown sugar if you can’t get hold of this)
    • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

    Preparation

      1. Toast the peanuts, sesame seed and coconut together – then make it into a fine paste in a blender.
      2. Put the oil into a pan and add the cinnamon stick, cloves and cumin seeds. When the cumin seeds start popping – add the ginger, garlic and onion. Once the onion starts taking on colour add the cumin powder and coriander powder and stir it all together.
      3. Add the peanut, sesame and coconut paste and stir in then add the tamarind pulp and stir it all together (you can add a dash of water if it is too dry).
      4. Keep this simmering at a low heat – and whilst it is, cook the aubergines using one of the following methods….
      5. You can deep fry them until soft. Alternatively – coat them with oil and put them in the oven for 30 minutes at 120 degrees centigrade – just keep a close eye (maybe cover them) to stop them exploding all over the oven due to the heat!
      6. Once the aubergines are done – simply add them to the pan along with any chillies you are adding and cook for 10 minutes.
      7. A fantastic vegetarian dish – and perfect with freshly cooked rice.
      • We realise that you lovers of the French film maker Eric Valli and Nepalese cinema know about this – but for the rest of you we thought we’d better let you know. Valli’s 1999 classic ‘Himalaya’ is being shown at the Filmhouse (15 minutes walk away) on the 14th of May. This is part of the festival of Himalayan film and culture which is running from 14th to 23rd May and also includes an exhibition of works in the Filmhouse too.

        There are going to be a range of fantastic films shown during the festival – but how about treating yourself to a real experience with a great Indian meal at your favourite Himalayan restaurant to finish the evening off perfectly.

      • Are you keen to get some authentic ingredients to help you cook Indian food at home – or maybe you just would like to find some great chutneys and drinks all the way from the other side of the world. Maybe you are keen to pick up some classic Indian desserts to pop in the freezer to enjoy after a great meal from your favourite takeaway/restaurant in Edinburgh!

        Whilst supermarkets are starting to pick up their ideas with some extra lines, a short drive (or bus ride) away from us is the fantastic Planet Asia, 1 Norton Park, Edinburgh EH7 5RS – Edinburgh’s finest Asian Supermarket situated just off Easter Road. They stock a really wide range of Halal foods as well as all the spices and authentic ingredients you will ever need. If you’re driving – you’ll also be glad to know they have free parking.

      • If you’re one of our more cultured customers you’ll maybe be aware – but for the rest of you, the Scottish Ballet are putting on a modern version of Shakespeare’s classic play, Romeo and Juliet, in May.  Supported by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra this is a fantastic opportunity to experience a great piece of ballet from Scotland’s finest dancers.

        Whether you attend the matinee or evening performance, with the balmy evenings starting across the city you can enjoy the food you love a mere stroll across the meadows away from the stalls.

      • Our chef – Ali has just returned home to the finest Indian restaurant in Edinburgh where it all began.  To give you a quick idea of how it all started – way back in 1975 Ali started work in one of London’s best Indian Restaurants.  7 years later – he came up to Edinburgh to be the chef in a new venture – the Himalaya Tandoori Restaurant – and we are still going strong after all these years.

        After leaving us – Ali has further developed his skills working in major restaurants in both London and Edinburgh.  Now we at the Himalaya Tandoori Restaurant – and all of our customers – are going to benefit from his 30 years of the best experience.

      • The first weekend in May is almost upon us – and it’s a special weekend at Murrayfield.  For all you rugby lovers it’s 48 hours of action – and this time it’s league not union.  For one weekend the cream of England’s Rugby League teams are going to be here with 7 games over the two days.

        This is a great opportunity to see what it is about Rugby League that has the whole of the North of England so excited – and with summer seeming to be getting closer – what could be better than spending the weekend watching live sport!

        You might wonder why we’re telling you about The Magic Weekend.  The reason is that our local customers are big rugby fans – and on a selfish level, that after a day out watching the game they generally come home hungry and ready for one of our great Indian feasts.
